Engaging Students in Citizen Science

There is so much to discover in our natural world — too much for scientists to handle alone! To maximize efforts, scientists often recruit citizen scientists to help. A citizen scientist is a member of the general public or an amateur scientist. While issues with data validity and collection standardization can arise, much of the natural world would go unobserved without citizen scientists. Join us to learn about citizen science and how you can use it in your classroom to provide authenticity in projects, plus learn some tips for keeping your collections valid!

Weather Watching Activities for Groundhog Day

Every year, we celebrate Groundhog Day and look forward to finding out if spring is coming or if we’ll have six more weeks of winter. In this session, we will dive into the history of Groundhog Day and then explore some more science-based weather concepts. We'll discuss activities that can provide students with the opportunity to track weather data and make predictions about whether or not the Groundhog will "see its shadow." Join us for a Groundhog Day celebration with a science twist!

Using Google Drawings to Teach Elementary Science Concepts

Google Drawings is not just a tool for teachers, it can also be used for student learning. In this session, we will look at how to utilize Drawings to teach science concepts by using visuals. Students will be able to synthesize information and develop their own understandings rather than just memorizing facts.

During this session, we will explore how technology can help support 1D to 3D learning, even in a hybrid environment. We'll take some time to review what exactly 3D learning is and how it's reflected in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). From there, we'll dive into various types of technology and how they can be used to support this type of learning, both in and out of the classroom. 

Revising Traditional Labs with Inquiry Thinking - Part 1

Have you ever experienced the following scenario? A science teacher gives his students a lab on the rock cycle. The students spend 20 minutes working through the lab, following each step closely. After the lab activity the teacher administers an exit ticket as an informal way of assessing understanding, only to see little to no improvement.
