Engaging in Citizen Science

There is so much to monitor in our natural world — too much for scientists to handle alone! To maximize efforts, scientists often recruit citizen scientists to help. A citizen scientist is a member of the general public or an amateur scientist. While issues with data validity and collection standardization exist with this method, without it much of the natural world would go unobserved. Join us to learn about citizen science, how you can use it in your classroom to provide authenticity to a project, and learn some tips for keeping your collections valid!

3D Printing: Modeling Geometric Shapes in Tinkercad

3D Printing is becoming increasingly popular in education, and for good reason. The process of creating a print from start to finish addresses many important standards students need to become 21st Century Citizens, for instance, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving as outlined in the 21st Century Framework and Common Core standard MP4: Model with Mathematics. Join us as we define the design process in the context of a classroom and dive into the beginning steps: planning and designing a 3D Print. By the end of this session, you will have the knowledge and steps needed to start a lesson on modeling geometric shapes with  an easy to use design tool, Tinkercad!

Digital Manipulatives for the Science Classroom

There are a large variety of resources on the web to support science curriculum for all grade levels. These include Shockwave Flash simulators, Java applets, and a plethora of Flash videos. We will discover how to find, download, and make good use of these high-quality teaching aids. How are you going to distribute this to your students? We will take a quick tour of how Google Classroom and other options can be used to share content with students and support the learning environment.

Labdisc: Solubility

In this course we'll look at just one of the many applications of a Labdisc in the Chemistry classroom. You can use any Labdisc to perform this activity. Our Curriculum Specialists will show you how to conduct an experiment to identify temperature's influence on a substance's solubility using the temperature probe provided with your Labdisc. They will then show you how to analyze and manipulate the data within the Globilab software as well as extensions you could bring to your classroom!
