Welcome to the wonderful world of Piper! Join us for this session where we will learn about the basics of the Piper Computer Kit, a DIY computer kit designed to be put together like a wooden puzzle. Once assembled, students have the opportunity to learn and play through an interactive video game experience. Using Piper, students will learn the basics of engineering, coding, and computational thinking, all while developing the skills they need to solve larger real-world problems using technology.

Cricut Basics

Cricut makes smart cutting machines that work with an easy-to-use app to help teachers and students in all subject areas and all grade levels design and personalize almost anything. In this session, we’ll go over the basics of using a Cricut and cover how to get started with your Cricut account and their design software. We’ll also discuss some cross-curricular activity ideas for you and your students so you can get started on creating unique projects. Let’s explore what this fun and easy to use machine has to offer!

Getting Started with micro:bit

Meet micro:bit, a pocket-sized computer that introduces you and your students to the basics of how hardware and software interact with each other. In this introductory session, we will take a look at all the different features that the micro:bit has to offer and teach you how to incorporate it into your classroom with some easy fall activities that you can use to engage your students.

STEAM Challenges with Strawbees

Strawbees are the perfect tool to inspire students to be creators and inventors! In this session, we will explore Strawbees, a hands-on, easy-to-use kit filled with straws and connectors that students can use to build their own unique creations. From building a bridge to crafting a ferris wheel, you’ll be amazed at how students’ imaginations will soar with Strawbees!

3Doodler Basics

Do you want to learn how to draw in mid-air, or create 3D objects without a 3D printer? Join us as we create 3D doodles and designs instantly with the 3Doodler pen! During this magical course, we'll go through the basics of the 3Doodler pen and come up with activity ideas to help you integrate 3D drawing into your classroom.

Introduction to CS with Makey Makey and MakeCode Arcade

Video game design is a great platform for learning computer science! Even better, video games are also a great opportunity to integrate Makey Makey by having students build their own controllers and integrate them into their games using Microsoft MakeCode Arcade. Join us to jump into designing a simple first game with MakeCode, and a custom controller using Makey Makey.

After 5 years of teaching middle school shop class, Derek entered the private sector developing educational kits and running professional development workshops around the country. As the Director of Product and Programs, Derek oversees the Makey Makey product catalog, the development of new products, and collaborates with the team to make sure they reflect the value of invention literacy.

In this session, we will move further with UBTech by taking a look at the UKIT Advanced, where students will have the opportunity to dive deeper into the mechanics, electronics, and programming behind high-tech robotics. MC: 3D Printing & Design: Session 4 - Going Further with TinkerCAD

Designing 3D models is made possible through computer-aided design (CAD) softwares. In session 4, we will continue to learn about the various tools in TinkerCAD to help you with your designs. We will explore how you can create patterns with the duplication tool, how you can place objects with precision using the workplace tool, and how you can engrave a text on your design. 

MC: 3D Printing & Design: Session 7 - Slicing for 3D Printing

In this course, we will develop our 3D terminology by understanding the print settings of your slicing software. We will use the MakerBot Print and Cura to learn how support, speed, infill, among other things, can contribute to the quality of your printed design.

Measuring Heart Health Using Labdisc

In honor of American Heart Month, we will look at one of the many applications of Labdisc in the classroom. We will explore how you can use your Labisc and heart rate sensor to monitor heart health. We'll also take a look at how you can analyze and manipulate associated data within the Labdisc software.

MC: 3D Printing & Design: Session 5 - Teaching with TinkerCAD

In this course, we will do a deep dive into the TinkerCAD Classroom. Learn how to create a class, add students, create and assign your own activities, and experince the student/user interface.

MC: 3D Printing & Design: Session 6 - 3D Slash

In the session 6 of this series, we will take a look at other ways students can design 3D objects to be printed.  The website, 3D Slash, encourages designers to start with a block or sphere and “design by subtraction” using hammers, chisels, and digital spray paint.  This is a great alternative for creating .stl files and is lots of fun!
