Rethinking Order of Operations: Innovative Strategies Beyond PEMDAS for Deepening Number Sense

NIX PEMDAS! Rethinking Order of Operations: Is there a better way to solve than brackets first or left to right? The traditional order of operations, a cornerstone in teaching mathematics, might not be the only way to simplify expressions. These rules, often encapsulated in acronyms like PEMDAS/BEDMAS/GEMS, are deeply ingrained in math education, but they may not always serve our students' best interests. Join Alice Keeler, an innovative math teacher, as she explores alternative strategies that prioritize number sense and conceptual understanding over rote procedure. This session is a journey towards empowering students to think critically and flexibly about math, breaking free from the constraints of traditional order of operations.

Alice Keeler is a teacher, mom of five, expert in edtech integration & virtual learning, speaker, and author. She is passionate about student-centered teaching and using tech to build relationships, empower students, and make learning better. She is the author of 50 Things You Can Do with Google Classroom and Stepping Up to Google Classroom.

Giving Valuable Feedback in the Math Classroom

Note, this course was previously aired but because of its popularity we are running a recording of this session live at this time. The presenter will not be able to address your questions, but our Professional Development team members will be in the chat box to answer any questions you have. This session can also be found in our Course Library by searching the same title.

Feedback is the key to helping your students feel more confident in their abilities! There is a lot of professional development out there about the “right way” to change these negative feelings in the classroom, but does this look different depending on the subject you teach? Join us for this course, where we will explore different ways to help students shift their mindsets to be able to grow and learn in your math classroom.

Promoting Financial Literacy in the Secondary Classroom

Financial literacy (FL) should be an essential skill taught in the secondary education classroom. We will explore the concepts of FL and how to promote them within social science, economics, and mathematics settings. We will review tools and lesson ideas to teach the basics of money management, such as budgeting, saving, debt, investing, giving, and more. This knowledge lays a foundation for students to build strong money habits early on and avoid many of the mistakes that may lead to lifelong money struggles.

Fight Photomath with Graspable Math

Are your students cheating on math problems by using apps like PhotoMath, Mathway, or other websites on their phones? This can be frustrating since it may be hard to determine what students actually know versus what they were able to solve with the assistance of their phones. Alice Keeler, math teacher and EdTech expert, will share with you the unique ways to use the tool, Graspable Math, to help students to develop procedural fluency. Make Graspable Math a part of your math classroom!

Error Analysis in the Math Classroom Using Edpuzzle

Do you want to increase student participation in your math classroom? Are you looking for ways to get your students motivated and actually think through their answers? In this course, we'll show you how to engage students and make math fun again using the built-in questioning feature known as Edpuzzle!
